A Cool Ridge couple is in Southern Regional Jail after allegedly breaking and entering into a cottage near Winterplace Ski Resort in Ghent and stealing items valued at less than $1,000.

Members of the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call at 7:30 a.m. on March 21 in reference to a possible breaking and entering in progress, according to the criminal complaint.

Upon arrival, officers witnessed a male flee the scene on foot. A large blue tote full of household items was outside on the porch and a flat-screen television was missing.

During the investigation, officers were able to review surveillance footage of the area where Dennis Wayne Gwinn, 44, could be viewed removing a string of lights from the cottage deck, the complaint stated. Additionally, a witness stated that a female was also with Gwinn and drove away before police arrived, but the witness was able to give them the vehicle’s license plate number.

The female was later identified as Theresa Gail Richmond, 42, who admitted that she and her boyfriend, Gwinn, had entered the cottage and had taken a television, deck lights, and a square brick fire pit, the complaint continued.

The television was found along Ellison Ridge Road in Flat Top after Richmond provided information about its location.

While executing a search warrant at the couple’s Cool Ridge home, police officers found the deck lights and the fire pit and were able to catch Gwinn, who had once again tried to flee on foot, across the street from his house.

Gwinn faces one felony charge of breaking and entering, one charge of conspiracy to commit a felony, one charge of petit larceny and one charge of fleeing a police officer. No bail has been set.
